Edit Villarreal is a playwright and screenwriter. She is best known for her play, My Visits with MGM (My Grandmother Marta), a largely autobiographical, poetic piece which remembers her childhood times spent with her maternal grandmother, produced by the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts (San Jose Repertory). Praised by Echo Theatre, who wrote that "part of Villarreal's power as a Chicana writer is her evocation of the duality experienced by the children of immigrants and their need to discover and embrace an identity that is both and neither".
Other plays include The Language of Flowers, a contemporary adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (ACT Theatre) and the comedy, Marriage Is Forever (San Diego Repertory Theatre).
Film credits include the American Playhouse production of The Tent Show and Foto Novelas: The Fix.
Television credits include PBS' critically acclaimed Independent Lens series, which Villarreal wrote the episode, Foto-Novelas 2: Broken Sky/Junkyard Saints.
