George S. Kaufman was an American playwright, theatre director and producer, humorist, and drama critic. Kaufman was the most successful playwright in the American theatre during Broadway's golden years between the two World Wars.
Kaufaman's brand of sharp comedy and satire produced forty-five Broadway plays. These works include his Pulitzer Prize-winning plays You Can't Take It with You (Booth Theatre) and Of Thee I Sing (Music Box/46th Street Theatres), as well as The Solid Gold Cadillac, The Man Who Came to Dinner, I'd Rather Be Right, First Lady, Dinner at Eight, and Once in a Lifetime (Music Box Theatre), The Late George Apley (Lyceum Theatre), Silk Stockings (Imperial Theatre), Romanoff and Juliet (Plymouth Theatre), The Royal Family (Selwyn Theatre), The Cocoanuts (Lyric Theatre), and Merton of the Movies (Cort Theatre). He also won the Tony Award as a Director, for the musical Guys and Dolls (46th Street Theatre).
